Introduction
L&M Survey Services offer a full-site engineering survey service, encompassing where required, monitoring and deformation surveys, earthwork volumetric calculations and precise levelling. For each project we undertake, we tailor our service to our client’s exact requirements, ensuring full customer satisfaction with our end product. Our expertise in this specialised field has led to framework agreements with some of the UK’s largest construction companies on major infrastructure contracts.
Case Study
In 2002 L&M won the Scottish Executive’s contract to deliver engineering survey solutions for the much anticipated upgrade of the southern section of the M77.
Our first involvement, prior to construction of the motorway, was to carry out a topographical survey of the route from Fenwick in East Ayrshire to the Eaglesham Road end in East Renfrewshire. We then digitised all the Compulsory Purchase Order boundaries.
Once construction began, we had six engineering teams based on-site, full-time over a period of 2 ½ years, undertaking earthworks surveys for the creation of the new road platform. This involved setting out of the new embankments, the road itself, plus structures, including bridges and culverts.
We then conducted as-built surveys to ensure construction met design. The road opened in 2005.

Specialist Equipment
Leica TPS1200+
For our topographical, engineering and quarry surveys, we use the TPS1200+ total station which provides the best reflectorless EDM performance available in the world – a reflectorless range of 2000m, PinPoint accuracy of 2mm and laser dot size of 2cm/50m. It is more efficient and faster than any other one-person-total station and therefore more cost effective. Working with an improved Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) sensor, the TPS1200+ tracks and follows the prism with the highest degree of accuracy and reliability.
Leica SmartStation
For combined topographical and GPS surveys, we use the world’s first total station with integrated GNSS/GPS. This high performance total station has a powerful GNSS/GPS receiver, while the RTK determines the position to centimetre accuracy within a few seconds at ranges up to 50km from a reference station. With less set-up time required and its general ease-of-use, the SmartStation is cost efficient through its increased productivity.
